Tales from the Neolithic; the Dartmoor Tor Enclosure Survey and the Piles Hill Excavations

Dr Lee Bray, lead archaeologist at DNPA

Dr Bray will update us on two recent projects that have used cutting-edge techniques to examine prehistoric sites on Dartmoor. Tor enclosures are peculiar to southwest England with 11 in Cornwall and 3 or 4 in Devon. They are areas of high moorland enclosed with stone banks incorporating one or more rock outcrops, but what was their origin and function? Dartmoor’s 85 stone rows are the world’s largest concentration. Recent work on the 850 metre length of Piles Hill Stones is the first to look at their origin and function.

At the Parish Hall with a 7.30 pm start. Bar available from 6.45 pm.

Non-members welcome – £4 on the door. Free entry for students.
